Acupuncture and IVF part I

IFV can be a challenging process for parents-to-be. Blood tests, injections, medical appointments to attend quite often around working full time can be rather stressful.

Acupuncture can help with the stress and anxiety around the whole process, but today I would like to talk about how acupuncture treatments before and after egg transfer have been proved to increase the success rate of IVF.

The highest quality and most conclusive studies have been four randomised control trials: Paulus et al, 2002; Dieterle et al, 2006; Smith et al, 2006; Westergaard et al, 2006. In the Paulus study, the clinical pregnancy rate in the non acupuncture group was 26.3% compared to 42.5% in the acupuncture group. The other three studies that followed achieved results of higher implantation rates, clinical pregnancy rates, biochemical pregnancy rates and ongoing pregnancy rates.

There is criticism of these studies, mostly around the use of sham acupuncture (acupuncture performed on areas not considered “acupuncture points”) and around “dosage” (acupuncture works best in slightly longer courses of treatment than two or three sessions), but the data looks good and acupuncture not only has very few side effects but can also help with other issues such as the stress of going through treatment.
