Acupuncture for Pain

Pain is the reason most people walk through my door. Back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, migraines, sciatica, knee pain, jaw pain, period pain, post-surgical pain, nerve pain, the kind of pain that moves around and refuses to be pinned to a single location. Pain is not one thing. It is dozens of things wearing the same label.

And most of the time, by the time someone books with me, they have already been told the scans are fine.

Pain is not a damage report

Here is the part that changes everything once you understand it: pain is produced by your nervous system, not by your tissues. Tissue damage can cause pain, obviously. But the relationship between damage and pain is far less direct than most people assume.

You can have a disc bulge and no pain. You can have no structural findings and pain that dominates your life. The difference is not imaginary. It is neurological.

When the body detects a threat (injury, inflammation, sustained stress, poor sleep, fear of movement), the nervous system amplifies the danger signal. Muscles guard. Blood flow reduces. Sensitivity increases. The area becomes reactive. Over weeks and months, this process can become self-sustaining. The original trigger heals. The pain system does not stand down.

This is called sensitisation, and it is the mechanism behind most chronic pain. It is real. It is measurable. And it responds to treatment.

How acupuncture works for pain

Acupuncture interrupts the pain cycle at multiple points.

It reduces nervous system reactivity. That is the big one. When the nervous system calms, muscle guarding releases, circulation improves, and local inflammation settles. The pain signal becomes less amplified. Less urgent. Less in charge.

It also works locally. Needling into tight, contracted muscle tissue increases blood flow, releases trigger points, and restores range of movement. For nerve-related pain (sciatica, post-surgical nerve irritation, numbness, tingling), acupuncture reduces neural irritability and helps the body recalibrate what counts as a threat signal.

I also use electro-acupuncture for certain pain presentations. Small electrical currents run between pairs of needles to stimulate endorphin release and modulate pain pathways more aggressively. It sounds dramatic. It is not. Most people find it surprisingly comfortable.

Pain has patterns

This is where Chinese medicine earns its keep.

Two patients with identical shoulder pain can have completely different underlying patterns. One has pain that worsens with cold and damp, improves with heat, and comes with fatigue and a sluggish digestion. The other has sharp, fixed pain that is worse at night, with restless sleep and irritability.

Same shoulder. Different treatment. Different points. Different rationale.

I assess the whole picture: where the pain is, when it is worse, what makes it better, how you sleep, how you manage stress, what else is going on that you might not think is related (but usually is). Pain does not exist in isolation. The nervous system producing it is the same one managing your sleep, your mood, your digestion, and your stress response.

What I treat

Back pain. Neck pain. Shoulder pain. Headaches and migraines. Joint pain. Sciatica and nerve pain. Post-surgical pain. Period pain. TMJ and jaw pain. Stress-related muscle tension. The pain that has been everywhere and nowhere for years.

If something is not appropriate for acupuncture, I will tell you. There are red flags for pain (sudden onset with fever, unexplained weight loss, neurological changes, pain after serious trauma) that need medical assessment first. I will always refer when something does not add up. That is basic competence, not excessive caution.
